Wessex Ravine Staircase

Walkable, Connected Neighbourhoods

With Provincial Community Works funding and CVRD Parks involvement, we helped bring the Wessex Ravine staircase to life, creating a safe walking connection between Upper Cowichan Bay Village, Marine Gateway Park and the seaside village.

The project also helps protect one of Vancouver Island’s largest Great Blue Heron rookeries, with nesting activity monitored through webcams operated by the Cowichan Estuary Nature Centre, with CVRD support.

A Village We Can Be Proud Of

Working with the Cowichan Bay Improvement Association, volunteers and community partners, we have continued efforts to keep our seaside village attractive, welcoming and vibrant.

In 2026, new flags were installed throughout the village to celebrate Canada Day and BC Day, adding colour and pride to our downtown.

Health & Resilience for Cowichan Bay

Restoration work led by The Nature Trust of British Columbia is helping renew the ecological and cultural health of the Cowichan Estuary.

The removal of remnant berms and creation of six tidal openings has improved tidal flow, supporting salmon, shellfish, migratory birds and estuarine habitat. This work strengthens climate resilience while supporting Indigenous stewardship and food-system renewal.

Restoring the estuary benefits the health and resilience of our community for generations to come.

Removing Derelict Vessels

Protecting Cowichan Bay

Progress continues on removing derelict vessels from Cowichan waterways.

These abandoned vessels can release fuel, oil, fiberglass and other contaminants, threatening eelgrass beds, fish habitat and shellfish-growing areas. Removing them before they sink is an important step in protecting the long-term health of our estuary.

Protecting Cowichan Bay means protecting the environment, recreation, heritage and beauty that make our community special.
